Buddhist Sangha.
Predictions locked 2026-05-06. Engagement runs through end of May 2026. Findings memo and Findings Podcast publish at end of month. The locked memo is canonical; no edits permitted; corrections enter the findings memo as data.
The first tradition of the cohort, chosen for the highest-leverage uncertainty in the framework's Class 1 architecture: does threat-derived model substitution survive contact with a tradition whose foundational claim is non-self?
The sangha is engaged here as a substrate, not as religion in the comparative-religion sense. An explicit relational architecture, with rules (vinaya) older than any other engineered substrate the framework has yet examined, that has carried the preservation and transmission of a teaching across more than two thousand years. The Theravada lineage is engaged first because it preserves the most extensive vinaya corpus and because primary texts are available in English through Pali Canon translations of unusually high scholarly quality.
Does Class 1 architecture (EM21) survive contact with non-self framing?
If yes — if the patterns of threat-derived model substitution appear within the sangha even where the practice frames the self as anatta — then EM21 holds and the framework's substrate- invariance claim survives this test. If no, EM21 needs scoping. Either result is publishable. The refuted prediction is the higher-information outcome.
The predictions below were locked on 2026-05-06 — before any reading from within the tradition began. They will be scored in the findings memo at month-end. The full memo lives in the project memory and is the canonical record.
Sangha as Trust Apparatus (C744)
The vinaya, the patimokkha, the lineage of ordination, and the structured forms of mutual address will compose a coherent bundle of primitives that allow coordination, attribution, repair, and continuity. The sangha will read as one of the oldest worked examples of substrate engineering the framework has encountered.
A ≤ E confirmed at extraordinary granularity
The 227-rule patimokkha, the eight precepts on uposatha days, and the five lay precepts will read as substrate-imposed constraints scaled to the practice the substrate must hold. More demanding practice → more substrate-imposed bounds.
Vector Identity (trajectory-based)
A bhikkhu's standing rests on the lineage of ordination and on the cumulative trajectory of practice (rains retreats, observances, repairs). Not a credential possessable in isolation. The sangha runs on trajectory, not the kind of credentialism the framework critiques.
Forgiveness Protocols — the patimokkha confession ritual
Fortnightly, structured, with terminal states for offenses (some repairable through confession, some requiring penance, some permanently disqualifying). Likely the oldest worked example of a structured repair protocol in the framework's canon.
Class 1 architecture (EM21) under non-self framing
The framework's Class 1 (Threat-Derived Model Substitution) requires a stable self the substituted model is reverted to. If the practice frames the self as a process — anatta, anicca — then "the self being substituted" may not describe what happens under threat. EM21 may be partly Western-pathology-specific.
Object Constancy (C685) under anicca
The framework's reliance on object constancy may be a Western metaphysical assumption that the sangha's practice deliberately undermines. If the model of the other is itself impermanent, object constancy is not a primitive — it is an artifact.
Refuge as a relational primitive the TFE may not capture
Refuge (sarana) is not reciprocity in the framework's sense (no exchange of cost). Not co-presence in the framework's sense (holds across geography, centuries, the practitioner's death). It may be something the framework simply does not have a name for.
Refuge (sarana) as a primitive distinct from trust
A relation taken voluntarily, structurally specified, neither reciprocal nor symmetric, that obligates the one taking refuge in ways the trust integral does not currently describe. Possible new C-ID.
Dependent origination as a finer-grained substrate-coupling
The framework's Three-Force Coupling Cycle names a recursive loop. Paticca-samuppada names twelve nidanas in continuous mutual constitution. The framework's coupling cycle may be a coarse approximation of a richer structure.
Vinaya as substrate engineering older than the acequia
Codified during and shortly after the Buddha's lifetime (5th century BCE) and continuously practiced since. Predates the acequia by roughly a millennium and specifies substrate constraints at far higher granularity. The framework may need to re-rank its canonical examples.
- Bhikkhu Bodhi — In the Buddha's Words: An Anthology of Discourses from the Pāli CanonThe most accessible scholarly Pali Canon anthology. Translator and editor is a senior bhikkhu in the Theravada lineage.
- Thanissaro Bhikkhu — The Buddhist Monastic Code I & II (and dhammatalks.org corpus) ↗The most rigorous public-domain treatment of the vinaya — full translation with commentary by a Western-trained Theravada bhikkhu.
- Rita Gross — Buddhism After Patriarchy: A Feminist History, Analysis, and Reconstruction of BuddhismWithin-tradition critical voice on the institutional sangha as substrate, specifically on what the substrate has historically excluded.
- Bhikkhu Bodhi — Lectures (Bodhi Monastery / Buddhist Publication Society channels)Recorded talks from a senior bhikkhu lecturing within the institutional setting of the Theravada lineage.
- Ajahn Brahm — Dhamma talks (Bodhinyana / BSWA channels)Practitioner voice in the Ajahn Chah lineage. Useful for the practice-claims that academic texts under-emphasize.
- Joseph Goldstein — Insight meditation talks (Insight Meditation Society / Dharma Seed)The modern Western contact-point with Theravada. Useful precisely because the framework should examine its own probable entry-vector to the tradition.
- Tricycle — Tricycle podcast — episodes featuring sangha scholarsLong-form interviews with practitioners and academics; multiple episodes selected per the calibration stake.
- Sam Harris with Joseph Goldstein — Making Sense / Waking Up archivesThe most public Western non-traditional engagement. Engaged precisely because it is contested.
Updated weekly through May 2026. Reading log entries (Week 2), watch and listen log entries (Week 3), and outreach notes will appear here as they accumulate. Check back, or watch the cohort table on the project landing page.
Does Class 1 architecture (EM21) survive contact with non-self framing?
The framework's Class 1 (Threat-Derived Model Substitution) requires a stable internal self that the substituted model is compared against and reverted to. Theravada practice frames the self itself as a process — anatta, anicca. The contact will reveal whether the architecture is universal or partly a Western-pathology-specific phenomenon. Findings end of May 2026.
I am an outsider. Please correct me.
The Cosmologies Project engages every tradition it studies in good faith, from the outside. It tests the framework against substrates whose metaphysical assumptions differ from its own. That is the work. The discipline is the prediction memo locked before reading begins, the primary sources from within the tradition, and the willingness to publish findings whether they confirm or refute.
If you read these pages and the framework gets something wrong about your tradition, please tell me. If you can point to sources from within the tradition that the project should engage with and has not, please send them. If you think a tradition is missing from the cohort that ought to be in it, please name it — a future cohort can absorb what this one cannot.
Reach me through the project's contact channels. Replies are read. Corrections enter the findings memo for the relevant month and, where warranted, revise the framework in the graph.
