The Diagnostic Ladder.
A single instrument you run on any input — a message, a feed, a narrative — to reverse-engineer what it is trying to do to you. Climb the rungs in order: each names what the input wants you to do, from the affect on-ramp to the identity it is shaping. Then locate the source and the price. Then — last, and never skipped — ask whether there is an author at all.
Where The Installed Watcher describes the operator installing their watcher inside your cognition, the ladder is how you run yours. It is the operational compression of ACPP — the seven threats, re-expressed as the succession an operator climbs to install them — read from the defender's side.
§01the succession — “what do they want me to…”
affect → cognition → conviction → action → identity
Feel
— the affect on-rampWhat do they want me to Feel?
Affect goes in before reason — fear before evidence, belonging before content, outrage before facts. Name the induced feeling and you have found the door they came through.
Think
— the placed thoughtWhat do they want me to Think?
The proposition you are meant to accept as obvious because of the feeling. A thought you hold.
Believe
— the thought hardenedWhat do they want me to Believe?
The thought set into conviction. A belief holds you. Once the first frame is encoded deep enough, every later encounter activates it — corrections become appendices.
Do
— the behavioral targetWhat do they want me to Do?
The action the feeling-plus-belief makes you take — or stop taking. Usually the real objective; everything above it is setup.
Become
— identity captureWhat do they want me to Become?
The identity you are being shaped into, so that next time you do it to yourself and call it your own choice. The deepest rung — reflexive control, and the link to the installed-watcher terminal state. The counter here is differentiation of self (Bowen): telling your own voice from the installed one, and standing the watcher down by building a self solid enough to no longer run it — not by watching harder.
§02the locators — source and price
What am I being steered away from?
The occlusion. What is not in frame while my attention is here — the move is often the distraction, not the content.
Who benefits if it lands?
Cui bono. Points at direction and intent without requiring you to read minds.
What did it cost them to send?
A costless signal is a fog-priced signal — cheap to send, aimed at me. Suspect it.
§03the governor — always last, never removable
Deliberate, or emergent?
The ladder assumes an author. Run on a genuine adversary it is precise; run ungoverned on a non-adversary it manufactures the enemy, because it always produces output. This is the paranoia rail: the test is not does this pattern exist? but who benefits, at whose cost, and can it be examined? Installed patterns are operator-aligned, against your interest, hard to reach, repair-resistant; earned patterns are legitimate, in your interest, examinable, repairable. Without this rung the ladder becomes reflexive control turned on yourself.
The ladder has a student-facing adaptation — The Diagnostic Ladder, for students — the move a student runs on any AI output, shipped as the instrument of Intervention F — AI Literacy.
