the reader-side defensive method
Defensive Cognitive Terrain Inoculation.
Defensive Cognitive Terrain Inoculation (DCTI) is the reader-side instrument. A six-stage walkthrough of the cognitive pipeline operating on the reader, named in the order the body experiences it. The literature describes what an operator does to a target; DCTI inverts the frame — when the reader walks through the stages, what is happening inside the reader's body?
Naming the stage is the first move toward agency in it. A signal you can identify as operating at the affective tagging stage is a signal you can hold at arm's length while the prefrontal cortex catches up. The whole DCTI method comes down to that move, repeated across six stages.
the double move
The craft principle that distinguishes diagnosis from propaganda.
An essay that reveals the cognitive pipeline must run the pipeline on the reader (the thumb-stop, the affective hook, the first-frame imprint) and name the pipeline mid-execution. The reader experiences both halves — the capture and the recognition of the capture.
capture without revelation = propaganda, regardless of intent.
revelation without capture = lecture.
both, in order = diagnostic.
From /canon/ethics: Propaganda uses the pipeline and hides it. Digital Gravity uses the pipeline to reveal the pipeline.
§01the six stages
stage 01
Pre-attentive capture
The reticular activating system flags a stimulus and routes it upward before consciousness chooses. Subcortical visual relays fast-track motion, contrast, face-shape, threat-shape to the amygdala via the short subcortical route, bypassing visual cortex. Bottom-up; not chosen.
The pause. The held breath. The pupil dilation you don't see but the device does. Something has entered the attentional field before you have named what it is.
stage 02
Affective tagging
The amygdala classifies the signal along valence and arousal axes before semantic processing. The autonomic nervous system prepares the body — heart rate, cortisol, sympathetic shift — and a tag is attached to the stimulus that the next stage will inherit whether the signal warrants it or not.
Small heat in the chest. Mild dread or mild thrill. The sensation that this matters before you know why it matters. Meaning is being attached to signal before truth is being evaluated.
stage 03
Mnemonic encoding
The hippocampus writes the signal into episodic memory; the affective tag from Stage 2 acts as a consolidation amplifier. The first version of any narrative encodes as the base frame; subsequent corrections encode as appendices. The continued influence effect is the empirical signature.
A sense of already-knowing the next time the topic comes up. A confidence that you have a position, when what you have is an encoding. The substrate of your future thinking on the subject is being shaped, and it cannot be unshaped once set.
stage 04
Valuation
The prefrontal cortex evaluates the signal — but on a dataset already weighted by the tag from Stage 2 and the encoding from Stage 3. What feels like reasoning is motivated cognition operating on pre-loaded inputs. The scales were loaded before the weighing began.
The certainty. The sensation of having thought it through. The feeling that your conclusion was arrived at by deliberation, when the deliberation was a confirmation pass on a verdict the lower stages had already issued.
stage 05
Behavioral commitment
The basal ganglia and motor cortex translate valuation into action. The instant you take external action — share, click, repost, vote, defend — cognitive dissonance reduction engages. You now have self-image investment in having been right to act. Reversing requires admitting prior stages produced an error; the self-consistency drive makes that admission expensive.
The relief of having done something. The faint defensiveness if challenged. Slightly more committed to the position after sharing than before. You have become a node in the propagation network — the signal is using your social graph as its next channel.
stage 06
Residue and repair
Most corrections never arrive. The ones that do enter through a different channel, at a different speed, with a different affective tag. The original arrived through high-arousal cognition; the correction arrives procedurally. The two encodings do not compete on equal terms. Belief perseverance is the clinical signature.
The yeah-but sensation. The way you know the original was wrong but still reach for it under stress. The way the feeling outlasts the fact.
§02the six drills
Each stage above has a body-level counter. These are the personal drills — practices, not thought experiments — one per threat, each named with the single thing it cannot do. Open a drill to read it.
how
When something seizes your attention — image, push notification, headline, link — count four seconds before any further engagement. The seconds are not for thinking; they let the cortex catch up to a capture that already happened. Body cue: the held breath is the capture.
when
Anytime attention is seized rather than chosen: a held breath, heat in the chest, the urge to click right now.
what it doesn't do
Doesn't prevent capture (capture is structurally faster than any drill) and doesn't replace verification. Useless if practiced as a virtue signal.
§03for your role
What the drills look like in practice for five defender roles. The drills port across roles; the calibration does not.
For analysts
Coordinated-inauthentic-behavior signatures and OSINT verification through multiple hops. Hold several attribution hypotheses before locking one, and document the gap in real time — an unnamed institutional category is a finding, not a failure.
First-Frame Audit · Steelman · 48-Hour Rule
For journalists
Source-doesn't-exist red flags and the verification-versus-velocity tradeoff. The 48-Hour Rule is incompatible with breaking news, so substitute the Witness Protocol — two-source confirmation — as the velocity-compatible analog before amplifying.
Capture is more effective on a developing nervous system. Build the somatic vocabulary the Body Check depends on through embodied play and unstructured outdoor time, and model the audit aloud in family conversation about the news.
Body Check (as a family ritual) · First-Frame Audit · 48-Hour Rule
For educators
Prebunk: show the technique before the content, so students recognize the structure rather than get argued out of a message. Teach the audit and the steelman as method, not as content. Effects are modest and decay, so sustained practice across a year beats single sessions.
The movement's architecture either resists or invites installation; cross-cutting coalitions are slower to mobilize but more resilient against fracture. A movement that fails without repair leaves members in cognitive states the next operator inherits.

empirical anchor · the Flourishing Course (Haidt, NYU Stern)
Jonathan Haidt has been running DCTI as an undergraduate course at NYU Stern for over a decade — without using the framework's vocabulary, with measurable annual results. Two assignments carry the curriculum.
01Day one: turn off nearly all phone notifications for a week. Report on what was missed versus gained.
02Week three: delete social-media apps from the phone for a week. Browser access permitted — the friction is the point.
Reported result, consistent across cohorts: nothing important is missed; a great deal of agency is regained. Friction as sovereignty, noticing as recovered capacity. That is the six-stage walk-through above, run on the reader's own substrate, for a week.
Mary Oliver supplies the three-line compression Haidt closes on: Pay attention. Be astonished. Tell about it. The defensive inverse of the six stages, in eight words.
§04operator's language set — reference
The same six stages, mapped across operator vocabulary, craft vocabulary, and somatic experience. Use as a scan; the walk-through above is where the reading happens.
