Enshittification is substrate capture at the machine clock.
Cory Doctorow named how platforms die. The framework says it is the same structure as an ungoverned system's ambient breach — a placeless, unattributable A>E, cured by interoperability. Just a faster clock, with an optimizer at the controls.
“Enshittification” is the best-known name for a structure the framework had already been describing in water, soil, and code. This page tests whether the two are genuinely the same thing — and names where they part.
Cory Doctorow coined enshittification in 2022 and gave it its canonical form in early 2023: “Here is how platforms die: first, they are good to their users; then they abuse their users to make things better for their business customers; finally, they abuse those business customers to claw back all the value for themselves. Then, they die.” The American Dialect Society made it the 2023 Word of the Year; Macquarie followed in 2024; it now carries entries in both the Cambridge Dictionary and Merriam-Webster. In October 2025 Farrar, Straus and Giroux published the book — Enshittification: Why Everything Suddenly Got Worse and What to Do About It (352 pp; 2026 Locus Award for Nonfiction) — whose final third is the remedy program: competition, muscular privacy law, data portability and interoperability, and antitrust.Cory Doctorow · Pluralistic / Wired (2022–23) · FSG (2025)
Is enshittification the same structure as substrate capture — A exceeding the environment's capacity to hold it — or a vivid analogy that borrows physics vocabulary it hasn't earned?
Genuine. Enshittification is an ambient breach of the economic substrate — the same placeless, unattributable A>E the framework names for any ungoverned system. The operations map, the cure (interoperability) transfers in both directions, and it sits on the intentional, machine-clock branch of the substrate-capture family — not identity (the materiality differs), well above analogy (it predicts).
Enshittification is an ambient breach
Name the structure and it stops being only an economics story. An ungoverned platform — its four disciplining forces neutralized — is indefensible by construction, the same way an ungoverned agent fleet is. The degradation is not a risk; it is the default condition realizing itself. That is the framework's Ambient Breach, in the economic substrate.
The general theory this is an instance of — a measurable progression from exposed to broken, with the same placeless A>E and the same interoperability cure.
Operation preservation
The test that separates an isomorphism from a metaphor: can you perform an action in one substrate and predict the result in the other? Each row maps a Doctorow operation to its framework operation.
Independent convergence
Seven witnesses, none coordinating, all landing on the same structure: remove the constraint that disciplines the powerful node, and the relationship inverts from mutualism to extraction, then collapses. Convergence is the evidence.
Where the map breaks
An isomorphism earns trust at its boundary. Both variables below are ones the framework had already drawn — the map breaking precisely where it predicted is itself evidence the map is real.
Enshittification has an optimizer — a firm twiddling toward shareholder value. Aquifer depletion has none. Enshittification sits on the intentional branch of the family: you can antitrust a platform; you cannot antitrust an aquifer.
Digital is costless to reconfigure, so twiddling runs at the machine clock; hydrological and biological capture run at the body / aquifer clock. Same physics, different velocity.
Because the operations map, the intervention transfers. The framework's prescription — restore the bounding constraint, restore the right to exit — is Doctorow's prescription for platforms, and it is also the prescription for a depleted commons and a cheating mutualism. “Monopolies get greedy” predicts none of that. A ≤ E does. And the honest limit holds in the same breath: the corporate-finance flesh — quarterly earnings, growth mandates, the psychology of twiddling a recommendation feed — does not map to an aquifer. Only the skeleton does: remove the constraint, the relationship inverts, the substrate collapses.
“In the weeds” — overwhelm as the felt side of A>E
Drawn from the system's side, enshittification is a phase transition. Drawn from the user's side, it is overwhelm — the circuits-overloaded state of being flooded by a placeless degradation you cannot locate, name, or leave. Brené Brown's word for it is overwhelm; the kitchen's word is “in the weeds.” It is the human reading of A>E: when autonomy outruns the environment that was meant to hold it, the people inside the environment are the ones who drown.
In the graph
Where this sits in the framework's terrain. Enshittification is the dense node at the center; the heavy edge runs to Ambient Breach — the general theory it is an instance of — and both resolve on the same cure: interoperability.
Doctorow named the death of platforms. The framework's only addition is the claim that it is not only platforms that die this way — and the receipt for that claim is that the same cure works on water, soil, and code.
