six clusters · operational source guide
Canon clusters.
Six clusters of intellectual lineage the framework draws from. Each one names a tradition, the figures who built it, the operational concepts it carries, and the cautions that travel with each citation.
The ancient arts already knew how to invoke attention, emotion, memory, belief, and action. The rupture is that digital systems industrialized those mechanics. The clusters are the inheritance; the rupture is what the framework adds.
a note on the IDs
The badges throughout this page (e.g. C705, P165, TN20) are anchor IDs in the project's knowledge graph. They are an author-side tracking aid, not part of the reading. Readers can ignore them — or use them as a starting point to seed a knowledge graph of their own.

§01operational summary
Each cluster names a tradition, a public phrase the canon's vocabulary travels under, and the failure mode the cluster is held against.

§02the six clusters
integration target
The why of installation. Pairs with Critical Theory on how installation scales and Improvisation on the counter-practice.
Direct intracranial evidence for fast subcortical pathway.
John BarghP224
Historical anchor for automaticity; replication caveat applies.
member concepts
Free Energy PrincipleC706
Brains minimize prediction error; self-organizing systems resist disorder by inferring and acting.
Active InferenceC707
The brain acts to confirm its predictions; behavior is prior-conforming action.
Installed Prior as Perceptual OrganC708
An installed prior is the lens through which experience is constructed, not a belief held alongside it.
Predictive ProcessingC104
Perception as top-down inference modulated by precision-weighted prediction error.
Precision-WeightingC105
How the system allocates attention by weighting which prediction errors matter.
use with caution
Anchor automaticity in Friston/Clark; Bargh's behavioral-priming effect sizes do not survive replication (TN20). Pair Méndez-Bértolo with Pessoa for population-scale claims (TN21).
integration target
The how of installation at scale. Names the institutional substrate that shapes which priors come to feel like common sense.
anchored by
Karl MarxP240
Base/superstructure: directionality of infrastructure → consciousness.
Antonio GramsciP78
Hegemony as installed common sense; civil society as substrate.
Theodor W. AdornoP241
Culture industry as population-scale attention-capture.
Material infrastructure shapes consciousness; the directionality is what the cluster carries.
Hegemony as Installed Common SenseC711
Hegemonic priors feel like perception, not belief. Bridges to Predictive Processing.
Culture IndustryC712
Population-scale attention capture through commercial media structure.
Lifeworld ColonizationC713
Communicative life colonized by market and bureaucratic rationality.
Communicative RepairC714
Repair requires conditions where participants can speak without strategic distortion.
use with caution
Marx and Gramsci can activate identity-protective cognition in some audiences. Lead with Habermas's lifeworld/system framing in public-facing work (TN22).
integration target
What resilient distributed infrastructure looks like. The biological exemplar of complexity science applied to trust topology.
anchored by
Suzanne SimardP165
Empirical anchor; carbon transfer via mycorrhizal networks; mother-tree hubs.
Merlin SheldrakeP244
Network problem-solving without central cognition; rerouting.
member concepts
Wood Wide WebC60
The popular framing of the underground fungal infrastructure connecting trees.
Mycorrhizal NetworkC41
The empirical substrate; not all edges receive equal resources.
Mycorrhizal Networks / Simard's ResearchC421
Mother trees preferentially feed kin and stressed neighbors; edge repair at ecosystem scale.
Mother Tree Architecture (distributed-with-hubs)C716
Older hubs preferentially supply carbon and nitrogen to vulnerable seedlings; neither hierarchical nor uniform.
Decentralized but Non-UniformC717
Connectivity with redundancy and differentiated capacity; reroutes around local failure.
use with caution
Cite Merlin Sheldrake only — Rupert Sheldrake's morphic resonance is outside the canon (TN23). Use the metaphor structurally, not behaviorally; forests do not 'decide' (TN24).
integration target
Why substrates must be actively maintained. Each contributor names a different attributable mechanism — say which one is being borrowed.

John H. HollandP245
Complex adaptive systems; tagging and internal models.
Philip W. AndersonP246
Emergence and boundary conditions; reductionism does not entail constructionism.
member concepts
Stability is PropagationC546
What persists in a living system is a pattern handed forward, not a thing held in reserve.
Dissipative StructuresC477
Order maintained far from equilibrium by continuous energy throughput.
NK LandscapesC719
Fitness landscapes parameterized by interdependence; high-K worldviews resist update.
Complex Adaptive Systems / Tagging + Internal ModelsC720
Tagging is the corruption surface; internal models are the priors adversarial operations target.
Emergence / Boundary ConditionsC721
Substrate-level phenomena require substrate-level explanation; defense at the wrong layer fails.
Superlinear Social ScalingC722
City-size scaling produces network-density thresholds where dynamics change.
integration target
Whether better infrastructure can win against market lock-in. Reframes deployment as a complexity-economics problem, not only an engineering problem.
Adaptive Market Hypothesis; maladaptive heuristics in changed environments.
member concepts
Path DependenceC724
Outcomes depend on the sequence of events leading to them, not just current conditions.
Network Lock-in (positive feedback / QWERTY)C725
Once a network reaches density, alternatives become non-viable; switching costs and coordination effects compound.
Differentiate / Select / AmplifyC726
The evolutionary algorithm operating on cognitive payloads in adversarial information environments.
Adaptive Market HypothesisC727
Heuristics evolved for prior environments; the wetware did not get the upgrade.
integration target

anchored by
Viola SpolinP250
Spontaneity as teachable recovery underneath installed scripts; point of concentration.
Keith JohnstoneP251

member concepts
Point of Concentration / SpontaneityC729
A single object of attention that displaces self-monitoring and frees genuine response.
Yes-AndC730
Acceptance-and-extension; the structural opposite of blocking. Communicative repair at body scale.
Status Anxiety as Override MechanismC731
Self-monitoring of social status defeats spontaneous response; the inner watcher's primary affective tag.
Aikido Harmony / Redirect rather than OpposeC732
Joining energy; meeting force with redirection rather than collapse.
Generative ResponsivenessC733
The five-property convergence — presence, relational awareness, irreducibility to rules, failure as information, body as instrument.
§03dependency map
The clusters are not six parallel additions. They form two causal arcs that meet at the framework's center, with a third pathway cutting across them as an independent-convergence traverse. Two views: a conceptual diagram of the two structural arcs, then a force-directed projection of the actual graph slice — including the traverse.
3a · conceptual
Two pathways descend in parallel — cognitive installation (PP → CT → Improv) and system persistence (Complexity Science → Mycelial → Complexity Economics) — and converge at Digital Gravity.
Cognitive installation
Predictive Processing explains why installation works. Critical Theory explains how it scales through institutions. Improvisation Traditions name the embodied counter-practice.
System persistence
Complexity Science explains why substrates need maintenance. Mycelial Networks show what resilient distributed infrastructure looks like in living systems. Complexity Economics names whether the architecture can win against earlier lock-in.
Brand traverse
An independent-convergence traverse, not a third arc. Stewart Brand reaches stability-is-propagation from civilizational observation rather than thermodynamics — maintenance as the central principle of civilization, biology, and self. Pace layers are the temporal axis of three-force coupling; the Whole Earth Catalog is the early counter-installation pedagogy the framework's installed-watcher reading inherits.
A live slice of the master graph showing the canon's reach into the rest of the framework.
The graph is layered. The six cluster anchors form the canon's spine — Predictive Processing, Critical Theory, Mycelial Networks, Complexity Science, Complexity Economics, Improvisation. Around them sit five bridge concepts — ideas that touch more than one cluster (hegemony as common sense, stability as propagation, complex-adaptive tagging, network lock-in, generative responsiveness) — and one signature figure per cluster who carries the citation in public-facing work.
Past those sit twelve framework hooks — existing nodes that live outside the canon and are pulled in by cluster edges. The Trust Equation, KTP, the acequia and la limpia, the forgiveness protocols, Layer 0, the ACPP attention-capture surface, the platform arc and the enshittification phase, the mycorrhizal network and the wood wide web. They are here because the clusters land across the framework, not only in the cognitive region — the same tradition reaches one node into Trust Force and another into the acequia.
Concepts render dark; people render warm. Node size scales with the number of connections — the highest-degree hubs read visually as larger. Click anywhere on the graph to expand it — the pinned positions release and the simulation reheats with stronger repulsion, so the cluster spreads apart and reveals its internal structure. Drag any node to reposition; click view compactly to return.

Maintenance ↔ Improvisation (weight 0.50)
the junction
The cognitive installation pathway explains how priors are installed and resisted. The system persistence pathway explains how installation patterns stabilize and whether repair architectures can compete. Digital Gravity sits where those two questions meet.
§04cautions
Five citation cautions encoded as graph tensions (TN20–TN24). Each names a hazard and the operational rule that keeps the canon honest about it.
TN20applies to C705
Bargh behavioral priming replication crisis
Bargh's 1996 elderly-priming study and subsequent goal-priming work failed direct replication (Doyen et al. 2012). Kahneman retracted his endorsement; z-curve audits estimate ~20–30% replicability.
operational rule
Anchor automaticity claims in Friston/Clark predictive processing. Cite Bargh as historically influential; do not depend on the specific behavioral-priming effect sizes.
TN21applies to C705
Méndez-Bértolo intracranial-sample caveat
Méndez-Bértolo et al. 2016 provides direct intracranial evidence for a fast subcortical fear pathway. The sample is epilepsy patients; the low-road / many-roads debate remains active.
operational rule
Pair Méndez-Bértolo for the direct evidence with Pessoa's entangled-brain framing for population-scale claims. The 'emotion before evaluation' claim survives; the strict two-system architecture does not.
TN22applies to C709
Marx / Gramsci politicization risk
Marx and Gramsci carry political associations that can activate identity-protective cognition before the intellectual content is reached. In academic and policy contexts the risk is minimal; in public-facing work it is not.
operational rule
Lead with Habermas's lifeworld / system colonization framing in public-facing work. Use Gramsci's hegemony-as-installed-common-sense in specialized contexts.
TN23applies to C715
Rupert vs Merlin Sheldrake — citation hazard
Rupert Sheldrake's morphic-resonance hypothesis is not accepted in mainstream biology. His son Merlin Sheldrake's *Entangled Life* is the correct primary source for the mycelial cluster.
operational rule
Cite Merlin Sheldrake only. Do not cite Rupert Sheldrake for any framework claim. If morphic resonance is raised, name it as a contested metaphysical claim outside the canon.
TN24applies to C715
Mycelial over-romanticization
The peer-reviewed findings establish resource sharing, distress signaling, hub-and-spoke architecture, and rerouting after damage. They do not establish collective intelligence, intentional coordination, or deliberate trust-building.
operational rule
Use the metaphor structurally (architecture of resilience), not behaviorally (forests 'deciding' to cooperate). The cluster is in canon precisely because it shows distributed trust without cognition; romanticizing it as cognitive undoes the load-bearing claim.
