File an IPRA in five minutes.

Public dollars buy these contracts. The contracts are public records. The fastest way to know what is in them is to ask. The New Mexico Inspection of Public Records Act gives any person the right to read them. This page hands you the request, the address, and the timeline.

§01Why this matters

Vendor data processing agreements set the rules for what happens to a child's voice, typed conversations, and learning patterns after they leave the classroom. Most districts, including SFPS, do not post these agreements publicly by default. The contracts and their DPAs are still public records under New Mexico law. A request brings them out into the open within a statutory window. The campaign relies on that request being made by enough people in enough districts that the terms become legible to the communities the children come from.

§02The request

Copy the subject line and the body below into an email. Fill in the bracketed fields (your name, address, today's date, the SFPS records custodian address from the next section, and your fee cap). The request covers contracts, DPAs, communications, AI deliberation-body minutes, and equity assessments from January 1, 2022 to today.

§03How to send it

New Mexico law allows IPRA requests to be sent by mail, by hand delivery, by fax, or by email to the designated records custodian. The Santa Fe Public Schools records custodian contact information listed on the district's public website is the correct destination. If the district has not published a current address, the superintendent's office or the general counsel's office is the appropriate fallback.

where to send
  • Santa Fe Public Schools, Office of the Superintendent or designated Records Custodian (verify the current address on sfps.info before sending).
  • Send by email with the subject line above. Request a delivery receipt or send by certified mail if you want a record of receipt for the fifteen-business-day count.
  • Keep a copy of the request, the date sent, and any response (including a request for an extension). The Source Bank can publish redacted excerpts with your permission.

Note: this page does not collect or store the request you send. Your request is between you and the school district. If you choose to share the response with the campaign, the source bank at /advocacy/sfps/sources is the place.

§04What happens next

within 3 business days

The records custodian must acknowledge receipt and either produce the records or provide a written estimate of when they will be produced. NMSA 1978, § 14-2-8(B).

within 15 business days

The records custodian must produce the records or provide a written explanation of delay. NMSA 1978, § 14-2-8(D).

if denied

A denial must be in writing and must cite the specific statutory basis. You may file a complaint with the New Mexico Attorney General under NMSA 1978, § 14-2-12, or seek judicial enforcement. The AG's Open Government Division publishes a complaint form.

Reproduction fees are governed by NMSA 1978, § 14-2-9 and may not exceed actual cost. Most electronic records carry no fee. The fee-cap line in the template lets you require advance notice if fees would apply.

§05What to do with what you get

  • Read the data retention sections of each DPA first. The phrase to search for is "improvement," "service improvement," "de-identified," and "training." That is where the long-tail commitments live.
  • Read the deliberation minutes second. The question is who was in the room and which voices appear in the record.
  • Send anything noteworthy to a journalist covering New Mexico education. The Santa Fe New Mexican, Searchlight New Mexico, and Source NM all cover this beat.
  • If you are willing, send a redacted copy to the campaign at kinetic-trust@proton.me. With permission, excerpts will be added to the public source bank.

§06The state’s records

The Amira mandate is the state’s, not the district’s. The contract value and term, the vetting records the Legislature’s analyst could not identify, and the subprocessor agreements all live at the Public Education Department — a separate agency, subject to the same statute, on the same fifteen-business-day clock. If you have five more minutes, this second request asks the state for what the district cannot produce.
