§01what repair repairs

The argument is done. You cannot unargue it. The event is fixed, and repair aimed at the event is aimed at the one thing that cannot change.

What can change is the map. Every relationship that survives contact with conflict maintains one: a working model of what the system can carry. Can it process damage, can one party be hurt here and still be safe, can we tear and return.

A rupture is a violation of that model. The environment did something the safety prediction did not expect, and the error registers: this place is less predictable than the map said.

Left unrepaired, the rupture writes its lesson. Damage here is permanent; hard things end in leaving; the range of what is safe to bring keeps narrowing. Enough unrepaired ruptures and the map shrinks to a corridor.

A completed repair writes the opposite lesson: we ruptured and returned. The environment recovers. The range holds.

§02repair in the equation

The trust integral carries a betrayal term, R. The common reading is that R only accumulates: damage in, damage kept. The repair layer says otherwise.

The integral drops at the rupture and recovers at the repair. Each completed repair decrements R, because the system just demonstrated the one thing R measures the absence of: recoverability. What a conflict costs depends on whether the repair completes, not on whether the conflict occurred.

Completion is strict. A repair signal given but not received closes no circuit; if the other side cannot acknowledge the rupture as real, the map does not update, and R increments as if nothing were offered. Delivery is not the unit of repair. Completion is.

The carrier of completion is specificity. “I am sorry you felt hurt” names the existence of a wound without naming the wound; it costs little, signals little, updates little. Real repair names three things: what I did, what it cost you, and why that matters to me.

One boundary, marked honestly. At institutional scale, before adversarial audiences, the signal can invert: there are documented conditions where denial outperforms apology. The relational mechanism's map ends there, and the framework keeps that exception on file rather than pretending the rule is total.

§03repair is not healing

Repair is relational. Healing is geological.

Two people can repair a rupture completely, genuine acknowledgment, circuit closed, and wake the next morning to the same terrain that produced it. The repair was real. The conditions are unchanged.

Healing is the terrain itself changing: the old groove losing depth, a new channel cutting where the water can run differently. It happens by accumulation, through enough contrary evidence and enough survivable returns to the old low places. It cannot be rushed by insight or forced by will.

Repair is the event. Healing is the terrain changing. Confusing the two is how relationships and nations alike come to believe they have healed when they have only stopped fighting.

§04resolve, three ways

Most of what gets called resolution is one of two counterfeits.

Exhaustion resolution: the energy runs out. High-conflict states cannot be sustained, so the system settles, and the settling gets filed as closure. The terrain is unchanged, and the next identical input finds the next identical fight.

Avoidance resolution: the territory gets fenced. The topic goes off-limits, the map of what is safe shrinks, and the shrinkage is recorded as peace.

Genuine resolve is topological: the terrain has changed enough that the old trigger no longer finds the old valley. It requires healing underneath it, and healing requires repairs that completed. The sequence that works is unglamorous: repair, repeated repair, healing, resolve that holds.

Resolve is a vector, not a destination. A system can be resolving while still rupturing, if the trajectory is toward convergence. This is governance in motion applied to conflict: a continuously recomputed heading.

§05the worldline

The event is fixed. The trajectory is not.

A worldline that carries a rupture and its completed repair is a different identity than one that carries the rupture alone. The first says: we are a system that tears and returns. The second says: we tear and drift.

Repair does not undo the event. It writes the next data point, and the return becomes the more recent truth about what the system is. Identity is a trajectory, and repair is how a trajectory takes damage without becoming it.

§06at civic scale

The mechanism does not care about scale.

A nation also keeps a map of what is possible, and unrepaired ruptures write on it the same way: slavery unreconciled, Reconstruction abandoned, internment never fully reckoned with, a financial collapse absorbed by the people who caused it. Each one wrote the same line: damage here does not get repaired. It gets buried, relitigated, or explained away.

Polarization is the same geometry. One event falls into incompatible valleys carved by different histories, and there is no neutral description of it, only the question of whose terrain it lands in.

Civic repair needs what relational repair needs. Specificity, because “we acknowledge historical injustice” is fog-priced at national scale too. Completion, a circuit that closes. And a third worldline: courts, press, and civil society independent enough to see the terrain from outside it, because no system can prove its own trustworthiness from the inside.

A ≤ E holds here without modification. The autonomy of any political actor must stay within what the environment can enforce, and elections, oversight, and judicial review are how a democracy recomputes its E on a cadence.

§07the open mathematics

This page advances an open question without closing it.

The framework's repair ledger asks whether a specifiable repair function exists: how much repair metabolizes how much betrayal. What is now on the record is the direction and the trigger. A completed repair decrements R rather than halting its accrual, and completion fires the update.

What is not on the record is the operator itself, the quantitative form. Until it can be specified as a measurable parameter on the trust integral across at least two substrates, Reconciliation Dynamics remains a mechanism with a direction and an honest gap.

The question is kept open at /canon/repair, which is also this site's own repair path: versions, corrections, retired claims. A framework about repair that did not keep one would have failed its own claim.
